As you know, every new season we give « carte blanche » to an artist to “dress up” our windows. This winter, we’re welcoming Filipa Costa.
It all began with a retro postcard of five friends in Jacquard sweaters skiing down an immaculate slope in single file (but we’ll come back to that when the time comes…). In any case, I was strolling through Instagram, looking for an artist who could set our winter collection to music, when I stumbled upon Filipa’s collages. I loved her work graphic and colorful, with a touch of humor and just the right dose of nostalgia. It fits us like a glove. Meet Filipa…
Can you introduce yourself and your work?
I was born in Porto in 1985 and I live and work as an artist and designer in Leça da Palmeira (North of Portugal). I started my studies in Interior Design but, before I finished, I realized my true passion was Art History, so I graduated from the Faculty of Arts of the University of Porto in 2011. Surfing is part of my family’s story, and this way of “seeing the world upside down” led me to create and run, for ten years, an innovative project in Portugal, Surf Leça , a space that combined a surf shop, rentals, an art gallery, and a studio. This experience shaped my entrepreneurial spirit and gave me the chance to collaborate with other artists, which expanded my creativity as a storyteller. Since then, I’ve taken part in art and design markets, workshops, exhibitions, and collaborations. I’ve also been a contributor for the renowned platform The Inertia since 2017 and, in 2018, I joined the collective “Art in Fins”. Collages are part of my universe where completely opposite patterns come together and give continuity to shapes and lines that take us back to an exotic and fragmented environment. The first handmade collages were made for my project , Surf Leça (art show posters) and after that I realized I did enjoy that kind of work. The concepts of space, construction, deconstruction and color are fundamental in my works. Since January 2017 I started working with digital collages.
Your inspiration for Victoire?
It all began when Camille reached out to me about the vintage ski capsule she was developing, which immediately resonated with a series of digital collages I had created around the same theme.
After several conversations where she showed me some of the pieces, three of my works were selected to be showcased in the Victoire store windows during the capsule’s launch.
The collages were originally conceived as an ode to the feminine world and the vintage universe and what could be more vintage than skiing?

As in much of my creative process, these works also follow a common thread, with unifying elements such as the presence of nature and motivational phrases.
Alongside these, I also created three additional collages (developed with the same line of thought) inspired by the masculine world for Victoire homme.

For you, what links your work and Victoire?
Excellent question!
As an artist and designer, this is my very first time collaborating with the fascinating world of fashion, and I couldn’t be more grateful for the opportunity, especially to create this synergy with Victoire.
When I was invited to take part in this collaboration, I began by studying Victoire’s history, and I immediately saw several points that connected us.

We are both deeply visual, and this “culture of the gaze” is present in every detail of our work, not only in the creation of collections, but also in the way we combine patterns, colors, and layers.
There’s also the joyful, passionate, and original way in which we dedicate ourselves to what we do, which naturally reflects in how we guide and connect with our clients. This creates a relationship of trust and empathy, something I believe is essential today.
What's your news, where will we be able to see you?
My mind never stops, I’m always creating and reinventing…
At the moment, I’m working on several projects, from handmade and digital collages to drawings, and experimenting with different sizes and dimensions. I’m collaborating with a few concept stores in Porto, such as Com Sotaque Vintage Store, Domus Arte, and Maisena, but I’m also looking to share my work in other cities, both in Portugal and internationally.
I really enjoy engaging with the public, which is why street markets, like Urban Market and Ohana — are essential to me; they allow me to understand how people connect with my work.
For now, you can purchase my pieces or reach out to me (I’m always open to collaborations) through my Instagram, @byfilipacosta. And very soon, I’ll be launching my own online shop.
