Right now, it’s Paris Fashion Week, and one question torments me: what is a good fashion show?
Let’s put the ecological aspect aside…
(If it is even yet possible to do it)
At the beginning, a fashion show is about introducing a new collection and telling the creative vision of a brand or a designer depending on the season. You discover pieces of clothing supposed to drive us crazy, keeping us waiting 6 months to wear them a true torture… It is kind of like with the Matisse exhibition; the set design doesn’t fire our imagination but we would like to hang a small line portrait (very simple) above the fireplace. You see what I mean?
The problem today is that we have the feeling sometimes that the setting has become the main feature.
Take Louis Vuitton for example… The image of these silhouettes that emerge from a monumental wave, it is magnificent, but no one talks about pieces of clothing, about the cut, about the style, or about the designer (by the way, not really the appropriate term to refer to Pharrell Williams, I agree… That said I am an absolute fan of his work as a producer and musician).
And what about Jacquemus, the staging genius: the lavender field, Versailles, and now the Rousse Island. To die for. But we completely forget about the pieces of clothing, aren’t we? It blends in the background to become one… and one doesn’t live without the other… Well, yes, forgive me, one lives without the other…
On the contrary, Prada, Hermès, Dries Van Noten. Sober setting, very graphic, and very elegant which leaves room for creation to express itself, for pieces of clothing to live, and for silhouettes to parade with grace. Chic and without fuss.
And then, every month, there is Matthieu Blazy who succeeds in making the perfect combo, according to me. The cleverness of the location: Biarritz where Coco Chanel had her habits, but mostly ideas, imagination, wonderful fabrics, embroideries that personify swimming, sun, freedom, joy. Relax chic, shells and crustaceans. Quite simply.
That’s said! Talent truly doesn’t need pizazz to express itself…
Except maybe on July 14th!
Have a nice weekend,
Camille
